What's the Real Difference? OEM vs. Custom Sensor Housing Manufacturers

Choosing the right sensor housing is crucial for ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of your equipment in various environments. Whether you're working in a controlled laboratory setting or in the midst of harsh industrial conditions, the type of housing you choose can significantly impact the performance and reliability of your sensors. This article will delve into the key differences between OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) sensor housing and custom sensor housing, helping you make an informed decision.

Introduction

Sensor housing plays a pivotal role in protecting and extending the life of electronic and mechanical components used in various industries, from automotive to manufacturing. When sourcing these components, you'll encounter two main types of manufacturers: Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and custom sensor housing manufacturers. Understanding the distinctions between these options can help you make the best choice for your specific needs.

Importance of Choosing the Right Sensor Housing

ACITEK Team Explores WATERTECH CHINA 2026 for Industry Exchange
WATERTECH CHINA – Shanghai International Water Exhibition

📅 Jun 9–11 | National Exhibition and Convention Center (Hongqiao), Shanghai

✅ Top-tier water treatment show in H1. Concentrated suppliers of water quality sensors & online analyzers. Coverage: industrial wastewater, pure water, aquaculture. Connect with domestic and global buyers.
This project is public bidding of the government, as a project leader for the first time to participate in such a large government bidding or has the certain difficulty, need to start from the prepared data, do the tender, including instrument selection, I chose the company pH6 + acidity meter, portable water quality analyzer its advantage is that English friendly interface, simple operation; It has gained the trust of the environmental protection government, providing a basis and guarantee for local environmental protection bureaus to better monitor water quality, making a significant contribution to the safety of drinking water in Anhui Province, receiving unanimous praise from the industry, and enhancing the company's reputation.
The importance of water quality monitoring industry in today's society
In today's society, water is a basic substance for human life and economic development, and its importance is self-evident. From daily drinking to industrial production and agricultural irrigation, the quality of water is directly related to people's health and sustainable development of the industry. The water quality monitoring industry has also shouldered a heavy responsibility and become a key line of defense to protect the safety of water resources.
Drinking water plant
Drinking water safety is clearly a critical priority.Yet the number of threats to water safety continues to grow daily, and include animal and human waste, improper disposal of chemicals, pesticides, and deep earth injection of hazardous materials. Contamination is also a threat due to improper water treatment and disinfection procedures, as well as from poorly maintained water distribution systems.
This project is a collaboration from Taiwan. The biggest challenge of this project lies in the large number and long distance of monitoring points. There are a total of 45 monitoring points, and each point needs to measure three parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen and temperature). Transmitting the data to the central control room using the traditional 4-20mA would waste a lot of signal lines and be unstable. In this case, I proposed to change the original 4-20mA output of the instrument to RS485. In this way, the 45 monitoring points can be connected in series and finally transmitted to the central control room through one data bus. This not only reduces the number of signal lines but also brings convenience to the on-site installation and commissioning.

Problems and solutions encountered in water quality monitoring
At a time when the world is paying more and more attention to environmental protection, the importance of water quality monitoring is self-evident. However, its development has encountered many bottlenecks. On the one hand, the uneven distribution of monitoring points and the insufficient number of monitoring points cannot fully and accurately reflect the water quality of the water area. Taking a large lake as an example, only a few monitoring points are set up sporadically around it, and the center of the lake and other areas have been in the monitoring blind spot for a long time. Once the water quality is abnormal, it is difficult to detect it in time. On the other hand, the aging of monitoring equipment and lagging technology have resulted in poor detection capabilities for trace pollutants and emerging pollutants. For example, some old sensors have extremely low detection sensitivity for some new pesticide residues, which cannot meet the increasingly stringent monitoring needs. At the same time, the massive monitoring data lacks unified standards and effective sharing mechanisms, forming "data islands" with low utilization rates.
